Forklifts play a vital role in warehouses, construction sites, and logistics operations, and many of them run on LPG cylinders. While forklift LPG is safe and efficient, a common issue operators may encounter is a gas leak at the connection point when attaching a forklift cylinder to the forklift. Identifying and addressing this problem quickly is essential for safety and productivity.

Why Gas Leaks Occur at the Connection Point

Gas leaks usually happen where the forklift gas cylinder connects to the forklift’s fuel system. This can be caused by:

  • A worn or damaged O-ring or seal.
  • Loose or over-tightened connections.
  • Debris or dirt on the connection point.
  • A faulty valve or regulator.

Even a small leak can be dangerous, as LPG is highly flammable and can accumulate in confined spaces.

The Soapy Water Test: A Simple Safety Check

If you ever suspect a leak, one of the easiest and most effective methods to confirm it is the soapy water test. Here’s how:

  1. Mix a small amount of dishwashing liquid with water in a spray bottle or bowl.
  2. Apply the solution to the cylinder’s valve and connection point.
  3. Open the cylinder valve slightly.
  4. If bubbles begin to form, it means gas is escaping — confirming a leak.

What to Do if You Detect a Leak:

  • Shut off the cylinder immediately.
  • Do not use the cylinder until the issue is resolved.
  • Contact your gas supplier for advice or replacement.
